Portfolio > In the Stillness / The Shape of Waiting

Drawing is a method of archiving time. Drawing is an act of centering attention, an avenue of delight, and a form of relationship. The meandering graphite lines and shapes of the drawings evoke references to natural phenomena and the subtle patterns of our skin. Each drawing retains a physical memory of its making suggesting its connection to both physical space that can be touched and the psychological space of symbol and intuition.

In art, as in life, the solution does not always reveal itself at once. More often than not, the process of revelation is gradual, and requires patience to see it in its fullness. I approach artwork in this manner of openness and waiting - allowing the process of drawing to bring me into a fuller understanding of the world around me. I often do not know what the end result will be when I start a painting or drawing, but I allow the decisions that I make along the way to lead me to my destination.

When I started this body of work, my wife was pregnant with our first child. While we knew what the end result of this pregnancy would be, every new stage, development, and change to my wife’s body was a surprise. The shapes found in these paintings allude to the mystery of containment - how pregnancy and indeed much of our emotional lives are internal realities that often dramatically influence the shape of our external lived experiences.
